Rachel Maddow, how so awesome?

This is how the media should discuss trans people – no misgendering, no references to “old names,” no assertions of so-called “biological sex,” no irrelevant digressions into medical history, no positioning of “trans” as more important than “woman” or “man”. Just this:

Here's another follow-up to a post-HBP Harry/Ginny/Luna story cycle! This one is part of the holiday-themed series that began on Christmas, 2005 with Flaming Nargles, and then continued on the first day of Hannukah, 2006 with Eight Flaming Nargles and on New Year's Eve, 2007 with New Nargles.

To those of you who celebrate the Orthodox holidays,
S Rozhdestvóm Khristóvym!

To the rest of you, just remember—it's always a holiday somewhere.
:-)

Title : Пылающий нарглы—Pylayushchikh Nargla

Rating : PG-13

Warnings : Implied threesome (gasp!). New parent weirdness. Ex-spouse weirdness. Holiday fluff. Follows HBP canon.

Length : ~1500 words

Summary : The holidays, after all, are about sharing love....

Note: As always, no Nargles were harmed in the writing of this fic.

+ A preview of V Magazine's upcoming issue featuring a plus-sized fashion shoot: Curves Ahead (the name's cheesy but the shots are gorgeous). \o/ eta: [personal profile] true_statement says the comments are awful, so, avoid for emotional well-being's sake!

+ FWD/Forward: Backscatter X-ray scanners, security theatre, and marginalised bodies

+ [profile] norahcharles: on the accessibility of fandom fests for people with social anxieties

+ Related to the above, FWD's Ableist Word Profile series is consistently good reading. I hope to have a more thoughtful post on that topic at some point, but today is not that day. I am, however, going back to [personal profile] coffeeandink's post on the subject, and mulling over comments.

+ Complex.com interviews Zoe Saldana, feminist awesome ensues.

+ [info]bluejeanius made an amazing banner for the #biggaybattle. (See AfterElton if lost.

+ I keep going back to these ridiculously great shots of Angel Coulby )

+ Lastly, omg we has a snow )

Thoughts while festividding: omg, this will never be done. Also, it's rubbish. Why did I even sign up for this when everyone else participating is so much better than me? Ack, woe.

Thoughts while working on the virtual season: omg, this will seriously never be done. Also, it's awful. Why am I doing this, everyone else on the project is amazing and I am fail! Ack, woe, second verse, same as the first.

See also: my academic research and writing. Sigh! Self-confidence, this was a really bad time to go out the window, don't you know I have deadlines?

ANYWAY. I procrastinated on all of that today by writing a thing for [info]i_claudia's Merlin wall!slam fest, which I shall post now in an effort to appear like I'm on top of things!

Paths, Nimueh/Morgause, R, 600 words, set sometime after 1x04 )

There's No Makebelieving by [info]miakun
Merlin/Arthur, Gwen/Lancelot, Morgana, Will, various, PG-13, 77K
The first time Morgana's step-brother and her flatmate meet, Arthur throws up on Merlin's shoes. And that might be the highlight of their relationship.

I've had the pleasure of reading this story in stages for a while now, and I finally get to tell the rest of you to go read it! This is a modern!AU populated with characters brimming with life in their new roles and new misadventures. Mia's writing is really gorgeous, full of detail and feeling, and she has this breezy pace that makes the time rush away as you're reading. What I love most about this story is how real it is - things are messy and complicated and don't always end how you'd expect, but each storyline is given such thought and attention that it feels absolutely right.

Read for the wonderful and slow-building Merlin/Arthur progress, the unholy trinity that is Merlin, Will and Morgana as housemates, and the entirely fabulous supporting characters - Elaine, especially, is my new favourite OC in the history of everything ever, and I promise you will love her too.

From various folk:

Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.

Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.

Question can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.

Fandoms include but are not limited to: HP, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Merlin, SGA, Firefly, SPN, Star Treks, T:TSCC, BSG, Legend of the Seeker and Leverage, though I'm not up to date on all currently airing shows either out of choice or lack of time.

*omg you guys, omg. This is so scary, I do not feel up to this! But it's about 2/3 done, maybe.

Happy New Year! May your 2010 be ten times better than 2009....

So, back in the pre-DH day, my friend and beta [info]aberforths_rug  and I wrote a series of fics that took place on or around various characters' birthdays. Very imaginatively, we called them
The Birthday Chronicles. Uncorked and With Feet Firmly Planted covered Harry's 30th (and the day after—both NC-17, H/G/L), Trick or Treat covered Pansy's 31st (R, Pansy/Luna), Simplicity covered Luna's 30th (NC-17, H/G/L) and Thirty-one, which was actually the first story written in the series, logically covered Harry's 31st (R, H/G). Oh, and Melancholia, a PG-13 H/G/L drabble, covered Luna's 42nd.

As it happened, I started another fic as part of the series about... oh... three years ago. And then I got caught up in other things—mostly Back to the Garden—and somehow this never quite got finished.

Well, it's finished now!

As for whose birthday it is... well, that would be telling. ;-)

Title: Birthday

Rating: Hard R/Light NC-17

Warnings: Pre-DH. Femmeslash, with some smutty bits. Implied polyamory. Obstetrics. Luna swearing. Kind of.

This story contains sexually explicit material. If you are under the age of eighteen--or the age at which such material may be legally viewed in your locality--please do not click on the link below.

Length: ~4500 words

Summary: Pansy needs to ask Luna about something, but Luna's focus seems to be elsewhere.

I'm not making any new year's resolutions this year, not now. Honestly, in January all I'm really aiming to do is pass my exams and survive until spring, it's not the best time to be worrying about my new exercise routine or whatever. (I would like to read some more books this year, though. After I graduate! Which is a strange notion.)

What I do like about New Year is the sense of a chapter closing, a moment of reflection and then moving on. This is what happened last year; what's next?

As for what happened last year - well, I was ill. Every time I look back over the last 12 months, it's a fact that colours everything. Here's the summer, where I was better, here's the autumn where it all fell apart again. This year was punctuated by bright periods of happiness, and I'm grateful for that, but they could only do so much the combat the weeks I spent pinned down by depression, like my own personal, inescapable gravity that showed no signs of letting go.

cut for discussion of depression and substance abuse that may be triggering )

You know, I was going to find a neater way to segue into this, but I'm running out the door and I've got nothing - have a happy new year, everyone. May 2010 bring you good fortune, peace, love in any of its many guises, and above all joy.

Here is a reclist of the year, of sorts. Below are a selection of fanworks that made me laugh, cry, flail, think, ache, rejoice and love over the course of the year. Below are romances, character studies, sweeping epics, AUs, meta, dance numbers, transitions, friendships, monsters, politics, zombies, and of course, robots. (There are always robots.)

Some of them are very famous, some only have a handful of comments. I love them all, because they all define what the past year in fandom was for me. There are a dozen fandoms represented here, and hopefully there's something for everyone. It's also worth noting that this list is defined by what's not included almost as much as what is - there were so many things I couldn't fit in! A lot of the time, I just couldn't pick only one story by a favourite author to include. (In one case, a certain author's best story is still sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to finish my beta.) My point is, this is in no way definitive, or even really a 'best of'. Just, here are some stories and some vids that I liked. Enjoy!

20 stories! )

13 vids! )

Thank you to all the authors, vidders, beta readers and cheerleaders that made the above possible, and here's to the stories to come in 2010. ♥

Title: And The Ashes Will Scatter (2/8)
Author: [info]the_birdnest
Pairing(s): Equal parts Draco/Asteria and Ron/Hermione with other canon pairings in the background.
Word Count: 4,000+
Rating: PG-13 for this part
Summary: The suspicious death of a former Death Eater while in Ministry custody kicks off an investigation.
Warnings: Language, angst, and death of a minor character.
A/N: This happens in the same "universe" as both Court This Disaster and the sorely-neglected More Than Our Abilities but you don't need to read either to follow this.

But don't you think Shacklebolt and Harry must have good cause to re-open the investigation? )
